World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
Chosen by this year’s host, China, the theme of World Environment Day 2019 invites us all to consider how we can change our everyday lives to reduce the amount of air pollution we produce, and thwart its contribution to global warming and its effects on our own health.
There are a number of different ways that you can get involved with World Environment Day, whether it’s making a change to your transport, the energy you use or even your diet. Below are just a few examples and suggestions of ways that you can help to #BeatAirPollution.
Don’t forget to take pictures to send to the Marketing team so that we can spread the word and encourage more people to take part in the day!
– Plant trees to create more green spaces – Host a company tree planting day – Install air quality monitors to check the area – Choose non-toxic paints and furnishings
– Use public transport, cycle or walk – Use car sharing – Switch to a hybrid or electric vehicle – Request electric taxis – Turn off the car engine when stationary – Combine errands and reduce trips – Walk to errands when possible
– Reduce consumption of meat and dairy to help cut methane emissions – Shift towards a predominantly plant-based diet to help lower ammonia emissions from livestock manure – Plant an organic vegetable garden – Reduce food waste – Avoid buying more than you need – Buy locally produced food products – Buy sustainable, certified food products
– Organise a community clean-up – Compost food and garden items – Recycle non-organic waste – Carry a reusable bag when going shopping (you can borrow a bag from reception!) – Buy sustainable goods/alternatives – Reject packaging and single-use items – Buy products that have a long life and that can be repaired and re-used
– Turn off lights and electronics when not in use – Use energy-efficient equipment – Ensure your power supply is renewable – Switch to clean and renewable energy such as rooftop solar panels – Switch to cleaner heating and cooking technologies rather than coal, wood or other biomass
The end of Ramadan will coincide with World Environment Day
If celebrating, consider buying only what you need so as to minimize air pollution and climate change
– Advocate for producing healthy & diverse food supporting environmental sustainability – Ask teachers and professors to incorporate curriculum on sustainability and air quality in the classroom – Ask city authorities or municipalities to provide timely, regular air quality data – Ask governments, cities and individuals to join the BreatheLife campaign – Urge or petition governments to introduce legislation to control the worst polluters, and follow up on progress – Advocate city authorities or municipalities to offer free transport in urban areas to encourage drivers to leave their cars at home – Ask governments to create a strong public transit system – Ask city authorities or municipalities to introduce pedestrian and cycle-friendly cities with separated networks for walking, biking and mass transit
