Glass partitions transform historic Granary Building at the University of the Arts London

In order to develop an environment that promotes learning, the building required part-restoration, forging a blend of old and new. Therefore, this combination of industrial and modern space creates a unique aesthetic that sets the building apart. The vision of architects Perkins + Will, was to create a flexible hub which could be adapted and transformed to meet the changing needs of the University. 

The importance of glass in design 

Glass is a particularly dominant feature throughout the Granary Building, creating a transition between the old and new elements and helping to produce a versatile fit-out. Moreover, at its centre is an internal street, covered a glass roof that maximises natural light traveling through the design. 

Working with main contractor, Overbury, we installed a number of our glass partitions and doors to enhance the aesthetic and atmospheric qualities of the building. Furthermore, by installing our glass partitions we created a collection of large, open plan breakout spaces and smaller private rooms. Optima 117 Plus single glazed partitions provide a flexible and attractive working environment. Additionally, this elegant glass partitioning system offers an impressive Rw33dB with 12mm toughened glass, providing the ideal solution to create an acoustically comfortable environment. As a result, our glass partitions offer a flexible and adaptable space that encourages collaboration and agile working within the University of the Arts London’s historic building. 

Specialised glass partition systems

We also installed specialist glass partitions in order to meet the safety standards in certain areas of the building. As a result, we provided the metal workshop and lobby area with 30/30 fire-rated screens and doors. Acoustic laminated glass was also installed to areas of the building where an excellent level of sound control was required to create quiet spaces for study. In addition, we designed bespoke glass features for the building which included display boxes with glass lids, as well as a free-standing feature screen.

Equally important, we installed a number of glass door systems within the design, reinforcing the outstanding acoustic privacy throughout. In particular, our Kinetic sliding glass doors integrate seamlessly into the design, providing an acoustic space saving solution.  

Visually impressive

Our glass partitions, both technically and visually impressive, brought to life the vision of a flexible, modern building fused with the historical elements of the existing 19^th century building. As a result, the impressive design provides an inspiring space for students, allowing them to work comfortably, collaboratively and creatively.
