Women in Construction Week 2025! A time to celebrate the talent, ambition, and fresh perspectives women bring to the industry. Despite being a historically male-dominated field, more women than ever are breaking barriers, leading innovation, and redefining what’s possible.

At Optima, we’re proud to celebrate the talented women across our business who continue to make an impact.

Our own Teresa Gorham, our Divisional Director of Health, Safety, Quality, and Environment (HSQE), brings 17 years of construction experience. From unexpected beginnings to leading major projects, we caught up with Teresa to hear about her experiences and how we can continue encouraging more women to step into the industry.

Taking a leap into construction

So, Teresa, was construction always part of your plan?

“Not exactly! I didn’t really choose the industry. I saw a job ad in the newspaper (back when job ads were in actual newspapers!) and thought, ‘I quite fancy a change!’”

“That leap led me to a 17-year career, shaping major projects like the London Olympics, Bloomberg London, and 1-3 Grosvenor Square!”

Encouraging more women to join construction

There’s still a gender gap in the industry. What do you think would help bring more women into construction?

“That’s a great question and I’d say, visibility is everything. Women Awareness Days can provide firsthand insight into the diverse opportunities available and showcase the women already thriving in these roles. People like to see others they can relate to.”

It makes sense. If more women see people like them succeeding, they’ll feel confident stepping into the industry.

“Exactly! Initiatives like these help bridge the gap and show there’s a place for women across all aspects of construction.”

At Optima, we recognise the importance of these initiatives and are committed to supporting the women within our business to succeed.

Lessons, challenges & breaking stereotypes

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

“Stand up for yourself, be more confident in your abilities, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Do you think perceptions of women in construction have changed?

“They have, but there’s still work to do, I think women often bring organisation, methodical thinking, and a sense of calm – qualities that are invaluable in every role. But, even as the industry evolves, misconceptions about women in construction persist, and there are still some attitudes about suitability for roles that need to be overcome.”

Looking ahead at Optima

What excites you most about the future at Optima?

“For me, it is all about building relationships internally and externally with all members of our supply chain, leading by example in all matters of HSQE. I want to keep promoting the message that H&S shouldn’t be seen as a tick-box exercise.”

As a woman in a leadership role, Teresa is a strong advocate for female-focused mentoring and leadership programmes to encourage more women to enter the industry.

“It’s not just about making an impact today, it’s about creating pathways for the next generation of women in construction.”

The industry has come a long way since she started, but there’s still more to do to ensure women not only have a place but a voice.

Celebrating women in construction

Teresa Gorham

Teresa’s story is just one of many that highlight the impact, resilience, and leadership of women in construction.

We celebrate all of our women at Optima, whose hard work, innovation, and dedication make a difference every day.

To all the women making an impact in construction, we see you, we celebrate you, and we thank you!
