Sustainably sophisticated glass partitions add to the EBRD’s new Canary Wharf head office

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has recently relocated its London headquarters from the City of London to Canary Wharf. The Bank has moved to the top 13 floors of the new state-of-the-art building at Five Bank Street. Working alongside main contractor Overbury and architect Perkins & Will, we created a sleek, warm, and welcoming office space across all 13 floors. Our glass partitions and doors created a stylish and dynamic workplace, designed to support the new ways of hybrid working. This move reflects ERBD’s commitment to sustainability, occupying one of the most environmentally advanced buildings in the UK. This sophisticated base building has already achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification. The Bank is also on target to achieve BREEAM Outstanding for the fit-out as well as the WELL Building Standard Platinum rating.

Sustainability at the heart of the design

With such a strong focus on sustainability, the EBRD wanted to create an office space that perfectly aligned with their own emphasis on environmental performance and resource efficiency. Completely modular, our glass partitions and doors not only offer a stylish option for the EBRD’s new office but they can easily be taken down and reused to meet their changing needs in the future.

With sustainability so high on their agenda, the reusability of our modular glass partitioning systems delivered a key design benefit for the EBRD’s new office. Therefore, alongside Overbury and Perkins + Will we created a detailed Deconstruction Guide, explaining how all our systems can be disassembled and reused. This comprehensive guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to deconstruct all the products installed at Five Bank Street in a safe and effective manner. The guide also details the various sustainable aftersales services we offer such as the Reuse and Take Back Services. Both offer our clients completely circular solutions whilst allowing us to take control over the entire lifecycle of our products. Following a green approach throughout this project has produced a working environment that aims to reduce waste and incorporate the Bank’s green values.

Acoustic performance  key for the EBRD

We all know how important acoustic privacy is in the workplace. With around 2,800 members of staff in the new building, acoustic performance was key for the EBRD. With this in mind, we installed several of our acoustic glass partitioning systems. Revolution 100 double glazed partitions were installed extensively throughout this sustainable London office. Achieving up to Rw53dB with 2 layers of 16.8mm acoustic laminated glass, this elegant system created a variety of workspaces. From solo booths to private offices and large meeting rooms, this acoustic system is ideal for different acoustic needs. With such impressive acoustic abilities, Revolution 100 offered the EBRD a truly diverse solution to meet the varying design requirements across the fit-out.

Unique to the project was the design of an audio window separating the control room and the vast auditorium space. Here, our glass partitions took acoustic sound proofing to a whole new level. By integrating a bespoke, demountable timber double glazed system, we exceeded the acoustic requirements required, delivering up to Rw60dB. Not only does this unique element offer superior acoustic performance but it sits in a distinctive framework, the colour of which is based on timber, offering a great aesthetic finish.

Bespoke design adds the final flourish

.The EBRD integrated a selection of customised elements into their new London office. At Optima we pride ourselves in turning our standard product into a bespoke product and that is exactly what we did for the Bank. We brought our bespoke capabilities to this project, installing curved glass partitions across the project. Curved Optima 117 Plus single glazed partitions create bright and dynamic breakout areas on several of the floors, offering a truly unique aspect to the design. Installed with 1×12.8mm acoustic laminated glass and Nebula Dry joints this single glazed system also delivers up to Rw38dB. Whilst delivering a bespoke design element across several of the floors, this stylish system offers great acoustic privacy.  Therefore, this bespoke system creates many elegant, functional spaces for people to take a break and catch up with colleagues. Furthermore, a reeded manifestation has been added to this bespoke curved system. The unique element provides visual privacy whilst also seamlessly breaking up the work and rest spaces in their open-plan office.
